Curd Rice Recipe ( Yogurt Rice or Thayir Sadam )

Posted by Veena Karanth at 00:33:00
Curd rice, as the name itself suggests is a combination of curd and rice. This dish is usually eaten at the end of the lunch or dinner since it has a soothing effect on the stomach. Curds ( which is also known as yoghurt or yogourt ) is obtained after the fermentation of milk. This fermentation is possible because of a few variety of bacteria. It has many antibiotic qualities and when consumed regularly, it can protect our body from many diseases. Curds help in our digestion process and hence it is eaten at the end. Curds can be prepared either at home or it is easily available in the market. Nowadays even flavored curds are available in all leading shops.

Method To Make Curd Rice

  • First and foremost we should boil the rice. I have already mentioned the recipe in one of my previous blog posts. Please do refer how to cook rice.
  • Take a big bowl or a vessel and add the cooked rice into it.
  • When the rice is completely cooled, mix in the curds and add salt to it.
  • If the mixture is thick, dilute it with some more curds.
  • Add pomegranate seeds, chopped coriander leaves and slit green chillies.
  • Meanwhile heat a small pan with ghee in it.
  • Add red chilli, urad dal, mustard seeds, chopped cashew nuts and curry leaves to it.
  • When it splutters, transfer it and mix it into the rice bowl.
  • Mix it well.

Kitchen Masti Points

  1. See to it that, the curds are not too sour.
  2. Instead of pomegranate, you can also use green grapes for a different taste.
  3. Slit green chillies can be omitted to avoid spicyness.
  4. Never mix milk and curds together. It is not good from the health point of view.
