Snakegourd Curry / Padavalkai Sihi Huli Recipe

This South Indian snake gourd curry is specially meant for those people who have sweet tooth. It tastes very delicious when eaten along with rice and topped with some ghee with it. This dish is a mixture of coconut scrapings paste and jaggery and  we do not use any dal in this curry.

How To Prepare Sweet Snakegourd Curry / Padavalkai Sihi Kootu.


The time required to prepare this curry is roughly around 20 minutes and the quantity mentioned is enough for 3 servings.

Ingredients For Padavalkai Sihi Kootu.


  • Snake gourd - 1 medium sized.
  • Green chilli - 2 .
  • Jaggery - 3 tbsp.
  • Salt - as required.
  • Coconut scrapings - 1 cup.

For Tadka ( seasoning ) 

  • Broken red chilli - 1. 
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp.
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
  • Urad dal ( black gram dal ) - 1 tsp.
  • Curry leaves - 1 string.



Method To Make Snake gourd Curry.


  • Wash and chop snake gourd into 1 inch size pieces.
  • Transfer it into a vessel.
  • Add around 1 cup of water.
  • Slit the green chillis and boil this along with the snake gourd.
  • Add salt and close the lid. Allow it to boil for sometime till the vegetables turn soft and tender.
  • Meanwhile grind coconut scrapings into a paste adding water at regular intervals.
  • When the vegetables are fully done, transfer the ground paste and mix it with the boiling vegetables. Stir it so that the coconut paste gets mixed along with the vegetables.
  • Now add the jaggery and let it simmer for around another 3 minutes in low flame and then switch off the flame.
  • Heat a small pan with ghee in it.
  • Add broken red chilli, urad dal, mustard seeds and curry leaves in it.
  • Allow it to splutter and then transfer it into the snake gourd curry.

Your sweet and easy snakegourd curry is ready to be relished. !!!!!.

  1. Use ghee exclusively while preparing this curry for the best taste. Using oil may ruin the curry.
  2. Jaggery can be used as per your taste.You can increase for more sweetness.
