How To Cook Rice - Indian Style ( 3 Methods )

Rice is the staple food of more than half of the worlds population. Chinese and Indians are the biggest consumers of rice. It contains plenty of carbohydrates and it acts as a fuel for our body. It plays an important role in providing strength to our body. There are two types of rice. White rice and whole rice. Whole rice is very useful for us because it is not processed. But, white rice is processed and thereby loses all the iron nutrients and other minerals present in it. The rice which is available in the markets is mainly white rice. So, the rice which we eat has almost no nutrient factors in it. That is the reason why rice is eaten along with dal, which is rich in proteins and other nutrients. It is believed that, people who rely mainly on rice develop the disease of beriberi due to the lack of phosphorus in the rice. Many varieties of rice are available like sona, basmati, jeera rice and so on. People normally cook sona masuri rice for eating. In olden days, rice used to be prepared in an authentic way. There  are three ways of preparing rice which I have mentioned in detail below.The type I have shown here, is the way people used to prepare rice in the olden days.

Method To Prepare Rice In A Traditional Way

Ingredients to prepare rice

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Water - 9 to 10 cups

Method to Cook Rice in the old traditional way

  • Take water in a big vessel and allow it to boil.
Boil Water
  • Once the water starts boiling, add the washed rice and transfer it to the boiling water. 
Add Rice
  • Once the rice reaches this state as shows in the below figure, it is assumed that the rice is ready.
Cooked Rice
  • Now, close with a help of a big lid and leave it aside for ten minutes.
  • Now, take another big vessel and pour the boiled rice and water as I have shown in the picture.
Drain The Water
  • Just hold the top vessel in your hand for five to six minutes so that the rice gets completely drained.
  • Leave the vessel in this position for a few minutes till the water totally drains out.
Seive The Water

Now, the white rice is ready to be served.

Boiled Rice

Method To Prepare Rice With The Help Of Pressure Cooker 

Ingredients to prepare rice

  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Water - 3 cups

Method To Cook Rice In Pressure Cooker

Pressure Cooker
  • Heat the pressure cooker with 2 cups of water inside.
  • Now, in another pan add 1 cup of rice, and wash it 3 - 4 times
  • After washing, add 3 cups of water and place it in the pressure cooker.
  • Close the lid.
  • When it starts steaming, close it with the cooker weight.
  • After 3 whistles, switch off the flame.
  • After 15 minutes when you are able to open the lid, your rice is ready.

Method To Cook Rice In A Rice Cooker

Rice Cooker


  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Water - 2 cups


  • Wash the rice thoroughly.
  • Place the rice in the given vessel of the rice cooker.
  • Add 2 cups of water and place it inside the rice cooker.
  • Switch on the cooker.
  • Stir it once or twice in intervals so that it does not get burnt.
  • When the indicator light goes off , your rice is ready to be served.
