Plain Mexican Tortilla Recipe

Posted by Veena Karanth at 20:59:00
Tortilla is a type of Mexican dish, very familiar to our own chapathi and roti. The key ingredient used here is maida ( all purpose flour ) but alternatively you can use wheat flour also. Here in this recipe, I have used both ingredients in different consistency. It tastes very delicious when filled with different stuffings. Using this tortilla, you can prepare various dishes like quesadilla, burrito, crepres and so on which I will be showing in my future blog posts.

How To Prepare Tortilla.

This Mexican roti requires around 15 minutes for mixing the dough and around 10 minutes for cooking.

Ingredients For Tortilla.

Maida - ( all purpose flour ) - 1 cup.

Wheat flour - 1 / 4 cup.

Salt - as needed.

Warm water - as required.

Olive oil - 1 tbsp.

Baking Powder - 1 / 2 tsp.

Method To Make Tortilla.

  • Take a big mixing bowl.
  • Mix in the all purpose flour, wheat flour, salt, oil and baking powder.
  • Now mix in slightly warm water and knead the dough.
  • Keep it aside for around 1 hour.
  • Now divide the dough into roughly lemon sized balls.
  • Roll out the balls into very thin circles.
  • Heat a skillet or a tawa and roast the tortillas till small brown slots appear on it.
  • Transfer it on to the serving plate.

Kitchen Masti Points.

  1. You can also omit baking powder and prepare the tortillas.
  2. The dough should not be sticky, otherwise you may not be able to roll out the chapatis.
  3. You can prepare this tortillas by using only wheat flour.
  4. It is not necessary to add  the stuffings right at the time of preparing tortillas. You can add the stuffings just before you are ready to consume it.
  5. I have used olive oil for this recipe. Feel free to substitute it with any other oil of your choice.
