Sabudana Kichdi Recipe.

Sabudana Kichdi recipe is one of the most preferable piquant recipes when you are on fast. Obviously, it is a taboo to have onions and garlic on those days and this sabudana recipe is a handy one. These tapoica or sabudana are small chewy bubbles which floats in puddings or in payasam. It is highly versatile, thickening agent like that of cornflour and variety of dishes can be prepared using this saboodana, to mention a few of them like sabudana vada, payasa, dosa and roti. This is typically a Maharastrian recipe.

How To Prepare Sabudana Kichdi.

The time taken to prepare Sabudana Kichdi is around 15 minutes and the soaking time is around 5 hours. The quantity mentioned here is enough for 3 servings.

Sabudana Kichdi Ingredients.

  • Sabudana (  Tapoica ) - 1 cup.
  • Salt - as required.
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp.
  • Green chillis - 4.
  • Coconut scrapings - 1 / 4 cup.
  • Ground nut powder - 1 / 4 cup.
  • Sugar - 1 tsp.
  • Ginger - 1 /2 tsp chopped.
  • Coriander leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Lemon juice - 1 tbsp.

For Seasoning

  • Red chilli - 1.
  • Oil - 2 tbsp.
  • Curry leaves - 1 string.
  • Jeera seeds ( cumin ) - 1 tsp. 


Method To Make Sabudana Kichdi

  • Soak sabudana in water on the previous night itself.
  • The next day, drain all the liquid if any, and place it in a bowl.
  • Fry the groundnuts in a pan without any oil till it changes its colour ( roughly about 10 minutes. ) Allow it to cool.
  • When cooled, remove the skin of the groundnuts by just rubbing in between your palms.
  • Discard the outer skin.
  • Now grind it in a mixer jar coarsely.
  • Mix this coarsely groundnut powder along with the sabudana.
  • Heat a non stick pan with oil in it.
  • Add the seasoning like broken red chilli, jeera, curry leaves and oil.
  • When the ingredients starts to splutter, add chopped green chillis and ginger.
  • Add turmeric powder and salt into the pan.
  • Add sabudana and mix it well.
  • Sprinkle 2 tbsp of water, close the lid and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Finally add scraped coconut scrapings, lemon juice, salt, sugar and chopped coriander leaves into the pan and mix it well.

Your delicious and tasty sabudana kichdi is ready to be served !!

KitchenMasti Points.

  1. While soaking the sabudana. See to it that you add water just enough to soak. Excess water is not required.
  2. You can fry the groundnuts and powder it on the previous day itself and save your morning precious time.
  3. Lemon juice is optional.
