Button Idli Recipe

Posted by Veena Karanth at 10:05:00
The main reason we call this type of Idli as button idli is its size. It is available in many of the South Indian restaurants. Some hotels have even innovated some new recipes out of this button idli. Green Masala button idli is one such recipe which is very spicy and and very awesome to taste which I will be showing it in one of my future blog posts.

For Button Idli, there is a slight twist in preparing the batter and ofcourse its bit time consuming but then ultimately you can be successful in bringing a smile on your child's face.

Button Idli Recipe

How To Prepare Button Idli.

Grind the batter and leave it aside for fermentation overnight. It takes roughly around 10 minutes to steam the idlis.

Ingredients For Button Idli.

  • Raw Rice - 1 1/2 cup.
  • Urad dal ( black gram dal ) - 1 / 2 cup.
  • Salt as required.
  • Oil - 2 tbsp for greasing.

Method To Make Button Idli

  • Soak Urad dal and rice seperately for 2 hours.
  • Grind urad dal in the grinder by adding water at regular intervals for  around thirty minutes till you get a smooth texture.
  • Now the remove the urad dal mixture from the grinder. However, see to it that you leave behind a small amount of this mixture back in the grinder.
  • Add the soaked rice and grind coarsely.
  • Now transfer this rice mixture from the grinder.  Mix it with the ground urad dal mixture.
  • Add salt and leave it aside for fermentation.
  • After 8 hours, grease the button idli moulds with oil.
  • With the help of a spoon, fill in the moulds and steam it in the cooker for around 8 minutes .
Button Idli

For serving this idli you have to prepare a sambar. I have already shown you my Hotel Style Sambar Recipe in one of my previous blog posts.

Now your delicious button idli sambar is ready to be served.!!!

Kitchen Masti Points.

  1. The most important point to be noted is that the batter should be quite thick or else the idlis will not be sturdy.
  2. Compared to the regular idlis, this button idli should be little hard in texture.
