Pumpkin or Kashi Halwa / Kushmanda Halwa Recipe

Kushmanda Halwa is an excellent and yummy sweet dish which reminds of bottle gourd halwa because of its exclusive taste. Here, the pumpkin is grated finely and mixed with ghee and sugar. In a way, the taste closely resembles Agra Peta.

How To Prepare Pumpkin Halwa.


The time taken to prepare this halwa is around 40 minutes. The recipe is simple to prepare, however, the time taken to cook it in a low flame consumes most of the time, and hence, it requires a lot of patience.

Ingredients For Pumpkin Halwa / Ashgourd Dessert.


  • Pumpkin ( Ashgourd ) - 2 cups.
  • Sugar - 1 3/4 cup.
  • Ghee or clarified butter - 1 cup.
  • Cardamom - 4.
  • Cashew nut pieces - 10.
  • Raisins - 6.

Method To Make Pumpkin Halwa.


  • Peel the outer covering of the pumpkin ( ashgourd ) with a knife.
  • Discard the seeds and cut into big sizes.
  • Grate the pumkin into fine pieces.
  • Heat a big and deep sized pan.
  • Remove the excess water from the pumkin and transfer into the pan.
  • Allow it to boil till the remaining water evaporates.
  • Now add sugar and keep stirring in a meduim flame.
  • Add ghee, little by little at regular intervals and continue stirring it.
  • Once you attain a single thread consistency or the halwa gets a sticky touch, add all the remaining ghee.
  • Mix in powdered cardamom.
  • Meanwhile, heat another small pan with 2 tbsp of ghee in it.
  • Add cashew nuts and raisins to it and fry till the cashew changes its colour.
  • Transfer it to the halwa and mix it well.
Your tasty and rich pumpkin halwa is redy to be served.!!!!!!

Kitchen Masti Points.


  1. After grating the pumpkin, keep it aside for some time so that it will loose its watery content.
  2. You can add ghee as per your wish -  you can increase or decrease a bit.
  3. This halwa can be stored for 2 days or for a week if you refrigerate it
  4. Saffron can be added for additional flavor.
  5. You can also use 1 / 2 tsp food color ( lemon yellow) 
  6. 1 / 4 cup of mawa / khova can be used for a richer taste but it is purely optional.
